Dog Bed Foam Cut to Size — Memory Foam, Reflex and High Firm Grades

UK-manufactured pet bed foam for dogs, cats, working dogs and oversized breeds — for over 40 years

Memory foam dog bed cushion in a British country kitchen

Pet beds usually wear out from the inside first. The cover still looks fine, but the foam underneath has gradually compressed, lost its support, and stopped giving your pet the comfort it once did. You then start noticing them choosing the kitchen floor, sofa, or carpet instead of their own bed. In most cases, the issue is simply tired foam rather than the bed itself. We've been cutting made-to-measure pet bed foam in the UK for over 40 years, producing bespoke replacements in all shapes and sizes, from small breeds like Jack Russells through to large dogs such as Newfoundlands.

For a standard rectangle (the shape most pet beds actually need), simply enter your required dimensions below and choose a thickness. We'll quote in seconds, cut to size in our own UK factory, and ship free next-day delivery to mainland UK.

Use the form above if you know your required dimensions and just want a standard rectangle mattress. If your pet-bed has a less standard shape (clipped corners to fit inside a crate, rounded edges, or an angled cut to sit inside a raised dog bed frame), you can select a shape from the selector below. Or if you'd rather, post us a template or drawing and we'll cut to match your custom shape exactly.

We have a wide range of UK-manufactured foam grades suitable for dog bed and other pet bed replacement foam, all cut to size in our own factory. Memory foam is the grade most customers ask about first, particularly for orthopaedic use with older dogs, but the right answer often involves a Memory layer bonded to a firmer base, which we'll explain in more depth below.

How to measure for a dog bed foam insert

If you're replacing the foam inside an existing dog bed cover, crate or raised bed frame, four simple steps will give you the right cut-to-size order:

  1. Measure the inside of the cover, crate or frame. Length, width and desired thickness. If using an existing cover, lay it flat and empty before measuring.
  2. Allow about 5mm clearance per side so the cover fits over the foam cleanly without bunching. Wire dog crates often have corner intrusions, so check for these before ordering.
  3. Choose your foam grade by dog size and age. Reflex foam suits dogs up to 30kg. High Firm is recommended for larger breeds and heavier dogs. For older or arthritic dogs, choose an orthopaedic specification: a Memory foam topper bonded to a Reflex or High Firm base.
  4. Enter dimensions and order online. Use the cut-to-size form above to enter dimensions and select your foam grade. For non-rectangular shapes choose from the shape selector, or post us a template for an exact match. All orders include free next-day delivery to mainland UK.

Choosing foam by your dog's size and weight

The right foam grade depends mostly on your dog's weight and how the bed gets used. Working rule of thumb:

  • Small dogs up to 15kg (terriers, dachshunds, pugs, miniature poodles): Reflex foam at 3 to 4 inches works well. Light enough to lift for cleaning, firm enough to hold shape.
  • Medium dogs 15 to 30kg (spaniels, working sheepdogs, beagles, whippets): Reflex foam at 4 to 5 inches, or High Firm if your dog has favourite spots and uses the same bed every night.
  • Large breeds 30 to 50kg (Labradors, Retrievers, Boxers, German Shepherds, Vizslas): High Firm at 5 inches, or doubled-up Reflex for the same effect at lower cost.
  • Giant breeds over 50kg (Newfoundlands, Saint Bernards, Mastiffs, Great Danes, Irish Wolfhounds): High Firm at 5 to 6 inches with a Memory foam topper for joint relief. Standard pet shop beds rarely cater for this weight range, so bespoke is usually the only realistic option.

Working and gun dogs (Springers, Cockers, Pointers, Setters) usually need a grade above their actual weight because they sleep harder and recover from physical work on the bed. A 25kg Springer ridden hard at the weekend gets treated as a 35kg Labrador for foam-grade purposes.

Orthopaedic foam for older or arthritic dogs

For dogs over around 8 years old, or any dog with arthritis, hip dysplasia, spondylosis or joint stiffness, Memory foam makes a real difference. The pressure relief reduces overnight discomfort and helps with the morning stiffness older dogs often have when getting up.

What we typically recommend is an orthopaedic specification: a Memory foam topper bonded to a Reflex or High Firm base. This combination gives you the support of a firmer foam (Memory foam on its own is too soft, and a heavy dog sinks too far into it) with the pressure relief of Memory foam where it matters. Thickness varies: 2 inches of Memory over 3 to 4 inches of base is a good orthopaedic starting point. For larger dogs or dogs with serious joint problems, 2 inches of Memory over 5 inches of High Firm.

This is the same combination we cut for the static caravan mattresses where comfort really matters; the principle is identical, just sized for a dog or other pet.

Common pet bed types we cut foam for

Standard mattress / rectangle beds are the simplest and most common. Reflex or High Firm cut to your measurements. Most dog bed covers from Pets at Home, Hugo & Hudson, Tuffies and similar fit a standard rectangle.

Crate beds usually need clipped corners or a slight bevel to sit inside the wire frame. Measure inside the crate, allow about 5mm clearance each side so the cover doesn't bunch. Wire dog crates have intrusions at the corners that catch a square cushion if you don't allow for them.

Raised dog beds (the kind with a tubular frame and stretched fabric) take the foam on top of the fabric platform. Usually thinner (2 to 3 inches) because the platform already provides some give, and you don't want to lose the cooling airflow that makes raised beds useful in summer.

Donut and bolster beds have a base cushion the dog lies on, with raised sides for the dog to rest its head. We supply the base cushion; the bolster sides are typically filled with shredded foam or polyester fibre that comes with the cover.

Outdoor kennel beds need a different grade. If the foam is going to get damp (kennel runs, sheltered outdoor areas, working dogs that come in wet), reticulated water-drain foam is the right choice. It's the same grade we use for garden furniture cushions; water passes straight through and the foam dries out within a few hours.

Sofa-style and bolster pet beds (where the dog sleeps on what looks like a small sofa) use the same grades as standard rectangle beds but tend to be thicker, often 6 inches or more, because they're designed to look like furniture.

Cat beds and small-animal beds

Cats prefer thinner, softer foam than dogs (typically 2 to 3 inches of Reflex), and cat beds tend to be smaller, so a single offcut from a larger project can sometimes be cut down at lower cost. We supply foam for cat trees, cat hammocks (the suspended kind that clip to radiators), rabbit hutches, and ferret beds. Small-animal accidents are common, so the foam usually wraps in a wipeable PVC or oilcloth cover supplied separately.

Foam grade examples

The three combinations below show what's most often supplied for pet beds.

Reflex foam with High Firm foam combination for medium-to-large dogs
Reflex + High Firm combination
Reflex top layer for comfort, High Firm base for support. Good for Labradors, working dogs, medium-to-large breeds without joint problems.
Full memory foam insert for cat beds and small dog beds
Full memory foam
Soft, pressure-relieving throughout. Suits cats, small dogs and orthopaedic specifications where weight doesn't compress the foam down to the floor.
Memory foam topper bonded to firm foam base for older or arthritic dogs
Memory foam + High Firm base combination
2 inches of Memory bonded to a firmer base. The orthopaedic specification we recommend most for older dogs and giant breeds.

Frequently asked questions

What's the best foam for a dog bed?
Reflex foam is the most popular all-rounder for dogs up to about 30kg. For larger breeds, High Firm lasts much longer under heavy weight. Memory foam toppers add joint relief for older or arthritic dogs but work best paired with a firmer base rather than used alone. Most cheap shop-bought pet beds use standard polyether foam, which compresses flat within 12 to 18 months under regular use; that's the foam grade to avoid for a replacement.

How thick should my dog bed cushion be?
For small dogs and cats, 2 to 3 inches is plenty. Medium dogs (Labradors, spaniels, working sheepdogs) typically use 4 to 5 inches. Larger breeds usually need 5 to 6 inches of High-Firm foam, ideally with a Memory foam topper for joint relief. Crate beds and raised dog beds can be thinner because the frame supports some of the weight.

Can I get foam cut to fit my dog crate exactly?
Yes. Measure the inside of the crate (length, width, desired thickness), allow about 5mm clearance each side for the cover, and use our cut-to-size service. We can also cut clipped corners or bevelled edges if your crate has a wire frame that intrudes into the corners. Wire dog crates from Ellie-Bo, Pawhut and Bunty all have slightly different internal dimensions, so measure rather than assume.

Is Memory foam good for older or arthritic dogs?
Yes, Memory foam is excellent for older dogs and dogs with arthritis or hip dysplasia because it relieves pressure on joints. We typically supply it as a 2 inch topper bonded to a 3 to 4 inch Reflex or High Firm base. Pure Memory foam alone often makes older dogs worse not better, because they sink too far into it and struggle to push themselves up.

How long does dog bed foam last?
Reflex grade typically lasts 4 to 6 years in a normal UK household. High Firm in the same household will outlast Reflex by 50 to 100 percent. The most common cause of premature failure is standard polyether foam (what most cheap pet beds contain), which compresses flat within 12 to 18 months under repeated use.

What size foam do I need for my dog?
Measure your dog from nose to tail when lying flat, and add about 20 percent for comfort. A spaniel typically needs 70 by 90cm, a Labrador 80 by 110cm, a Newfoundland or Saint Bernard 100 by 130cm or larger. The bed should be wide enough that the dog doesn't hang off the edge when stretched out.

Can I send you my existing dog bed cover to refill?
Yes. Our cushion refill service handles existing covers: send us the empty cover, we cut new foam to fit, return it ready to use. Particularly useful if you have a high-quality pet bed cover (Orvis, Tuffies, P&L Dog Beds, Tweedmill) that has outlasted its original foam insert. We can upgrade the foam grade at the same time.

Do you cut round or donut dog bed foam?
Yes. Choose the rounded edge or bullnosed shape from the selector above, or send us a template (a paper outline cut to the exact shape, full size). We cut to any shape including circles, ovals, donut bases and complex curves. Templates are the most reliable way for unusual shapes; we trace round them and return foam that matches exactly.
